Pregnancy Tips for Summer

Are you pregnant and wondering how you’ll be able to get through the hot summer days ahead? Pregnancy during the summer can be daunting, but we have some tips that can help keep you comfortable and cool during the summer months. 

Hydrate

Hydration is always important, but it becomes especially critical during the summer months when we are losing so much of our body’s water content through sweat. Get a water bottle that you love, keep it filled, and take it everywhere you go. 

If you find it difficult to drink so much water, try supplementing your liquid intake by eating hydrating foods such as watermelon, cucumber, celery, pineapple, tomatoes, strawberries, cantaloupe, and grapes. Not only will you be getting hydration from these foods, but you’ll also be receiving vital nutrients, electrolytes, and fiber. 

Wear Sunscreen

Pregnancy can increase your risk of getting a sunburn. When you’re out in nature, make sure to apply your sunscreen (at least SPF 30+) thoroughly about every 2 hours or so to avoid getting sunburned. Even when you don’t get sunburned, the sun’s UV rays could still affect you on a cellular level, potentially leading to skin cancer. Stay in the shade when you can to help you cool off during those hot summer days. 

Mineral sunscreen is recommended, and if you don’t like the white cast that it causes, try a tinted mineral-based sunscreen. Cover your skin as much as possible, and avoid being in the sun during peak UV hours (between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.). 

Go Swimming

For many, swimming is an all-time favorite activity for summer. During pregnancy, swimming can also help relieve some of the pressure caused by a growing belly and make you feel weightless. Plus, it’s a great form of exercise! Just be sure that if you are swimming outside, you are applying sunscreen regularly as the sun’s rays can reflect off the water.

Wear Comfortable Clothes

Loose, flowy clothes are great for pregnant people during summer as they provide breathability and won’t stick to your skin if you are sweating. Avoid clothes that are too tight or made from a heavy material such as wool. Linen shorts, flowy tops, maxi dresses, and skirts are all great options. Having a pair or two of comfortable shoes will also go a long way in keeping you comfortable during the summer. 

Get a Fan

Such a simple thing can make a huge impact on keeping you cool through the summer. Folding fans are an affordable option to provide you some relief from the heat when you’re outside and are easy to carry around. Hand-held, misting, or neck fans are also great for keeping cool during the summer months. If fans aren’t helping as much as you need them to, you can get a small towel wet and hang it around your neck. 

Go Somewhere with Air Conditioning

When it’s really hot out, go somewhere with AC. Sometimes that means staying at home or going to the movies, but we don’t want you getting over-heated and ending up with heat exhaustion or heat stroke. It’s okay to take it easy.
